Murder of Chola Prince Adhithya Karikala

Murder of Chola  Prince Adhithya Karikala

Aditha Karikalan was the eldest son of Sundara Chola II, the second Parantaka. He was a great administrator of the Thondai Mandala. In appreciation of his bravery, his father Sundara Chola bestowed the title of "Pandyan Mudikonda Chola". In the inscriptions found in the Thondai Mandala, Aditha Karikalan is also mentioned as "Parthivendran" or "Parthivendrathi Varma". Some historians argue that Atitha Karikalan and Parthi Vendran are the same person.

Before learning about the murder of Aditha Karikalan, we should take into account the events that took place during the reign of Arinjaya. This may also be a reason for the murder of Aditha Karikalan. We should see where this problem started. After Parantaka I, his eldest son Rajaditya must have ascended the Chola throne. Unfortunately, he died in the Takkola battle, so Gandaraditya ascended the throne and ruled for some time.

The one who came after him was Arinjaya Chola, who fought against the Pandyas and died a heroic death. It was Karikalan who killed his grandfather Arinjaya and beheaded Veera Pandya. Therefore, he received the title of "Ko Parakesari with the head of Veera Pandya". After Arinjaya Chola, Gandaraditya's son Uttama Chola must have assumed the Chola administration.

But Sundara Chola assumed the post and this is where the problem began. Uttama Chola was in despair of not getting the Chola throne. In this case, he ascended the throne only after the murder of Aditha Karikalan.. But during his reign, no efforts were made to find the killers of Aditha Karikalan. Therefore, Uttama Chola may also have been involved in this murder. This is a common occurrence in history. History has seen many kings who ascended the throne by killing their own brothers.

The murder of Aditha Karikalan may have taken place for the following reasons.
1) Political reasons (war for the throne)
2) To take revenge for the murder of Veera Pandyan

Aditha Karikalan was killed by Pandyan danger helpers Soman at Kadambur Palace for killing Veera Pandyan. It is said that Raja Rajan I and his sister Kundavai were also involved in this murder. But there is no truth in this claim. When Raja Rajan I came to power, his brother confiscated the property of those who killed Aditha Karikalan and exiled them, but did not give them the death penalty.

It is an incomprehensible mystery. As Rajaraja considered it not Kshatriya Dharma to kill Brahmins who had set up a clan before them. This news is mentioned in the Udayar Kudi inscription. It is the only inscriptional evidence that tells about the murder of Aditha Karikalan. Sundara Chola also died in the palace of Kanchipuram in the agony of the death of his eldest son Aditha.

Conclusion
If Aditha Karikalan had not died, his lineage would have ruled the Chola throne. History would have been reversed. It was a recurring story of the Cholas losing their eldest sons in battle. In any case, Aditha Karikalan's death is a fact that cannot be hidden in history. It may have happened for political reasons. Even if you think about it in many ways, the reason is "political".
