MELPADI AND ERUKKAMPATTU - A Historical                                      view

Melpadi is a town of historical importance, located about 25 km from Vellore- Vallimalai. It was also a great city during the Chola period. Melpadi is located on the banks of the Nuva River, also known as Nuka. This Nuva River is a tributary of the Ponnai River.

Etymology
Melpadi was originally called Melpadi. It means the town located to the west. The word "padi" refers to the area where the shepherds lived. It was called "Rajasrayapuram", one of the honorary titles of Rajaraja Chola I.

Historical Significance
As we have already said, Melpadi was a prominent town during the Chola period. Rajaraja Chola I built a temple here called "Arinjaya Eeswaram" for his grandfather Arinjaya Chola. Arinjaya Chola was called "Atur Thunjiya Devar". The Somanatheeswaram temple here was built by Rajaraja I. It is called "Cholendra Simman" after his honorary title.

It can be seen from the Garhat Copper Grant published by him that the Rashtrakuta king Krishna III camped here and stayed. During the Chola period, there were two main streets in Melpadi:
1) Mummudi Chola Street
2) Arulmozhi Deva Street

The victorious Chola kingdom of Melpadi was located in the "Thui" country. There was a sect of Saivism called Lakuleeswar Pasupadam here. It is said to have flourished during the reign of Rajaraja I. There was a Saivism monastery called Lakuleeswar Pasupadam in the Somanadeeshwar temple here. Its head was "Lakuleeswar Vara Pandit".The residents of Melpadi have donated 5136 1/2 acres of land to the Arinjiya Eeswaram temple here.

Architecture
The Somanadeeshwar temple here is a single-storied (single-storied) Vimana with a round, vesara-shaped peak. Nandi, sitting near the peak, is located at all four corners. The Arthamandapam with Sanctum is accompanied by a Mukhamandapam. The Kalyana Mandapa and the Unchal Mandapa here were built during the Vijayanagara period.

Erukampattu Ranganathar Temple

At Erukambat, 30 km from Ranipet, there is a temple in the Rashtrakuta style. The locals call it Adi Ranganatha Temple. The temple has a two-tiered Vimana and a rectangular spire, a spire that is rare in the Thondai region. It is entirely built in the Rattrakuta style. There is an Artha Mandapam with a sanctum sanctorum and a small gopuram. The Dwarapalaks seen outside the sanctum sanctorum may have been built during the Chola period. There are no inscriptions.
