Horses and elephants have a special place in history. They are the animals used in the chariots of kings and play an important role in the Aswamedha Yagya. This Aswamedha Yagya is an important sacrifice performed by kings to conquer countries. According to Romila Thapar, the horse is an animal that came to India from West Asia, that is, an animal related to the Aryan culture. Horse bones have been found in a few excavation sites in the Indus Valley. 

These may belong to the Rigvedic period. During the Sangam period, high-caste horses were imported from Arab countries as a gift from kings and merchants. Good horses were bought on the basis of their teeth, legs that indicated running speed, and thick mane. The place where horses were tied was called "tari". 

In wars, horses were given a muzzle called "karazh".

1) Kalima
2) Pari
3) Gundu
Even the place where horses were tied was subject to "vari". The horse was a coin with the image of a horse engraved on it. The mane of a horse was called "Ulai". The heroic song of a horseman was called "Khuthirai Maram". The horse was fed with husk and wheat as food.There are horses with beautiful gaits, like the speed of an arrow, and horses with fast legs.

Another important animal like the horse is the elephant. In the armies of ancient kings, horse and elephant armies were very important. There would be spacious barracks for the elephants to stay in. The tusks of the elephant are called "horns". Elephant hunting was one of the hunting methods of the ancient Tamils. Elephants would be adorned with gold ornaments. The person who looked after the elephant was called "Valavan". The main food of the elephant was banana leaves. The ancient Tamils ​​would dig pits to trap the elephant.

"குழியிடைக் கொண்ட கன்றுடைப் பெருநிரை"

Conclusion
The use of animals like horses and elephants may have begun in the Sangam period.
