Marriage was one of the ways of life of the people of the Sangam period. Today, it is considered a crime and a shame to marry a woman by running away (marrying without the knowledge of the parents), and to marry a woman by carrying her away, and to marry a woman by Gandharva (marrying with the five gods as witnesses), etc. were considered important. The talisman worn around the bride's neck was called "Mangala Naan" and "Aimpadai Tali". 

In the Sangam period, it was common for a man and a woman to make love. When the daughter of a tribal chief reached the age of marriage, the sons of the chieftains, i.e. the princes, would besiege the chieftain's gate and ask him to marry the girl. 

If he refused, they would besiege him with a large army.That town will also be destroyed. The young man thought, "How can I win the war and marry her?"

"கடுமான் வேந்தர் காலை வந்து, எம் 
நெடுநிலை  வாயில் கொட்குவர் மாதோ
பொருதாது அமருவார் அல்லர்."

"வாய் மொழித் தழும்பன்  ஊநூற் அன்ன 
குவளை உண்கண் இவளைத் தாயே"

"நெடுவேள் ஆதன் போந்தை அன்ன 
 பெருஞ் சீர் அருங்கொண்டியளே"

There was a swayamvaram to choose the bride or groom. The father of the girl would choose a warrior as the bridegroom for his daughter. He would organize a competition like lifting a round stone, climbing a tree, etc. 
The warrior who won this could marry the girl. During the Sangam period, the marriage of citizens was not done for political reasons. But the marriage of kings was done for political reasons. This custom continued in historical times as well. Kings would marry the women of the small landowners under their rule and increase their military strength and border strength.

There is not enough evidence that dowry existed during the Sangam period, but they would give many gifts to the girl and marry her. monogamy was most followed.

Poets also played a role in this marriage. His friend Kapilar had requested that the Velir king marry the daughter of Valla Pari. There was no polygamy, and the husband had a habit of entertaining himself with prostitutes. The wife would look forward to a husband who would entertain himself in such a way. The best example of this is the story of Kovalan-Kannagi. 

Before the wedding, the lovers would meet in private without anyone knowing. Sometimes when the lover who had given her the money went across the sea, the condition of the woman would become very bad.During the Chola period, 

it was common for a king to marry multiple women for political reasons. After the Aryan culture mixed with Tamil Nadu, various rituals were practiced, such as performing yagna, chanting mantras, and watching Arundhati.

Conclusion
Marriage was a simple thing in the Sangam period. But in this era, it has become a luxury. Love is not true, and marriage is considered an easily divisive thing.
